Edit a PDF and sign itwithout uploading it

Add text, pictures and your signature to a PDF, draw on it, highlight, cover or change a line of text, and rotate, move or delete pages. Everything happens in your browser, so the document is never uploaded.

  • Free, no sign up
  • Files never leave your device
  • No watermark

How to edit a PDF

  1. Step 01

    Add your PDF

Drop one PDF on the area above, or click it to browse. The pages appear as soon as the file is read.

  2. Step 02

Pick a tool and use it

Choose text, signature, image, pen, highlight or a shape, then click or drag on the page. Edit text lets you click a line that is already there.

  3. Step 03

    Move and adjust

Drag an item to move it, drag its handles to resize it and use the style bar for color, font, size and opacity. Undo is always one click away.

  4. Step 04

    Apply and download

The changes are written into a new PDF on your own device. Save it, or keep editing and apply again.

What you get

  • Everything in one editor

Text in three fonts, pictures, signatures, a pen, highlights, rectangles, ellipses, lines, arrows, check marks, crosses and a one click date.

  • Three ways to sign

Draw your signature with a mouse, stylus or finger, type your name in a handwriting style, or upload a picture of your signature. It can be reused on any page.

  • Pages too

Rotate pages, move them up or down, delete the ones you do not need and add blank pages, in the same place where you edit their content.

  • Private and free

No account, no watermark and no upload. The editor and the file both stay on your device.

What to know before you edit

New text is written with the three standard PDF fonts, a sans serif, a serif and a monospace one, in regular, bold and italic. They cover English, Portuguese, Spanish, French and other Latin alphabets. A character they cannot write, such as an emoji or a Chinese character, is replaced by a question mark, and the editor warns you before and after.

Edit text works by hiding the original line under a patch in the color of the paper and writing your new text over it, in the same size and color when they can be detected. The old text is still inside the file under the patch, so do not use this, or the Cover tool, to hide private information. Delete the page or recreate the document for that.

A signature placed here is a picture of your handwriting. It is accepted by many forms and contracts, but it is not a certified digital signature. If you are asked for one, such as an ICP Brasil or eIDAS signature, you need a provider that issues them.

The editor does not turn the fields of a fillable form into editable boxes. You can still fill a form by placing text, check marks and crosses over its fields, and the result looks the same in any reader.

A few shortcuts help once you are used to it. Delete removes the selected item, the arrow keys nudge it by one point (ten with Shift), Ctrl or Cmd with D duplicates it, with C and V copies and pastes it, with Z undoes and with Shift and Z redoes. Pressing an already selected text, or Enter, lets you retype it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add text to a PDF?

Add the PDF, pick the Text tool, click on the page where the text should start and type. Then drag it into place, resize its width with the handles and change the font, size, color and alignment in the style bar.

How do I sign a PDF online without printing it?

Press Signature, then draw your signature, type your name or upload a picture of your handwriting. The signature is placed on the page you are looking at. Drag it to the signature line, resize it and apply the changes.

Can I change text that is already in the PDF?

Yes, with the Edit text tool. Click a line of the page, retype it and the new text is placed over the old one. It works best on text made by word processors. Text inside a scanned picture is not text and cannot be selected, so cover it and write over it instead.

Does covering or editing text remove the original from the file?

No. The original stays under the patch and could be extracted by someone who knows how. It is meant for corrections and looks, not for redaction of private information.

Is a signature made here legally valid?

It is a picture of your signature, which many parties accept, but it is not a certified electronic signature. Whether it is enough depends on the document and the country. For documents that demand a qualified signature, use a certified provider.

Are my PDFs uploaded when I edit them?

No. The file is drawn and edited by your browser, and the new PDF is written there too. The Network tab of your developer tools shows no upload.

Can I fill in a PDF form?

Yes, by placing text, check marks and crosses over the fields. The fields themselves are not turned into editable boxes, so the filled in values are part of the page, not of the form.

Why do some characters become question marks?

New text uses the PDF standard fonts, which can only write Latin letters, digits and common punctuation. Characters from other alphabets and emoji are not available, so they are replaced by a question mark.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. You can draw, move and resize with a finger, and the toolbar scrolls sideways. A computer is more comfortable for long documents, because the pages are drawn by your browser and phones have less memory.
