How to calculate overtime

  1. Step 01

Enter the salary and the workload

Use the monthly hours the salary pays for: 220 for a 44 hour week, 200 for 40 hours.

  2. Step 02

Type the hours of the month

Separate overtime on working days, on Sundays and holidays, night overtime and the night addition on normal hours.

  3. Step 03

    Include the weekly rest

Leave it ticked to add the effect on the weekly rest, entering the working days and the Sundays and holidays of the month.

  4. Step 04

    Compare the net amount

The net gain is the difference between the net salary with and without the extras.

What you get

  • Each kind at its rate

50% on working days, 100% on Sundays and holidays, and the 20% night addition combined with overtime.

  • Weekly rest included

The paid weekly rest rises with habitual overtime, and the calculator adds that effect.

  • Shows what is left

Extras raise INSS and tax, so the net gain is smaller than the gross. The calculator compares the two net salaries.

How an overtime hour is calculated

The value of a normal hour is the salary divided by the hours it pays for in a month. Overtime on a working day is the normal hour plus 50%, and on Sundays and holidays plus 100%. Night work, from 22:00 to 05:00, pays the hour with 20% more, and night overtime applies the overtime percentage on that hour with the addition already in it.

The paid weekly rest (DSR) grows when there is habitual overtime. The calculation divides the total of the extras by the working days of the month, Saturdays included, and multiplies by the Sundays and holidays.

Overtime joins the salary of the month and raises INSS and income tax. That is why the net gain is the difference between the net salary with and without it. Collective agreements often pay higher percentages, and a time bank swaps payment for days off.

What each kind of overtime hour is worth

An overtime hour pays the value of the normal hour plus an addition: 50% on a working day and 100% on a Sunday or holiday. Night work, from 22:00 to 05:00, pays 20% more on the hour, and night overtime combines both additions by multiplying one by the other. Collective agreements may pay more than the general rules.

Frequently asked questions

How much is an overtime hour worth?

The normal hour plus 50% on working days and plus 100% on Sundays and holidays. The normal hour is the salary divided by the monthly hours, such as 220 for a 44 hour week.

How does the night hour work?

Work between 22:00 and 05:00 pays the hour with a 20% addition. If the night hour is overtime, the overtime percentage is applied on the hour with the addition.

What is the DSR on overtime?

It is the effect of habitual overtime on the paid weekly rest. The value of the extras is divided by the working days of the month, Saturdays included, and multiplied by the Sundays and holidays.

Why is the net gain smaller than the gross?

Because overtime adds to the salary and raises INSS and, depending on the bracket, income tax. The calculator shows the difference between the two net amounts.

What if my collective agreement pays more?

Adjust the hours: for example, if the agreement pays 60%, multiply the hours by 1.6 and divide by 1.5 to get the equivalent in 50% hours.

How do I calculate 50% overtime?

Divide the salary by the hours of the month (220 for a 44 hour week), multiply by 1.5 and then by the number of overtime hours. With a salary of R$3,000.00, the normal hour is worth R$13.64 and one 50% overtime hour is worth R$20.45.
